ILLAWARRA-SHOALHAVEN COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITIES update

In late 2020, community members and stakeholders gathered together through a series of COVID safe face to face workshops and a Zoom online session to start to identify the way forward for the Illawarra-Shoalhaven Compassionate Communities Project.  With COVID restrictions lifting, further community engagement occurred and a decision was made by the group to trial the running of a Death Café as a means of engaging with the broader community.

A trial Death Cafe was run for the core group. As a result, it was decided that the rollout of a Death Cafe Network across the region was a model that the community members and stakeholders were happy to endorse.

Since January 2021 there has been a flurry of activity to identify proposed locations and suitable venues for the rollout of a series of Death Cafes across the Local Health District. Proposed venues currently include Kiama, Jamberoo, Wollongong, Ulladulla, Warilla and Sussex Inlet.

Death Cafes will commence in March 2021 and will be advertised through the Compassionate Communities Illawarra- Shoalhaven Facebook page and listed on Eventbrite for Covid safe monitoring of attendance.

We look forward to seeing you there!
