Creative Legacy under COVID - Reflections from artist Amanat Grewal

Creative Legacy is a project that connects artists with palliative care patients and their families. The artists connect with the patient and use their skills to create a work of art, music, sculpture etc that reflects the patients life and celebrates who they are. The work is then shared with their family.

Here is some reflections from one of our resident artists, Amanat.

“Been a humbling experience to be back on the palliative care ward (virtually) for the Creative Legacy artist residency 2020 program during the tough and isolating times of Covid-19. Although nothing can compare to the experience of being physically present with the patient during our conversations about their life stories, the fact that this was made possible at all given the intense restrictions, was incredible!! ....And shall I say much needed for those going though end of life which for some mean that they do not know how long they have or will remain in the hospital without seeing their entire family at once. A shout out to @gludemann_illustrates for all the hard work and @groundswellprojectau for making this possible. I am positive that this project will brighten up the lives of many!!

This artwork emerged out of a zoom conversation with the patient at the ward who shared with me her love for horses, once being a Jockey in her younger days. It is through her love for horses that she met her life partner who unfortunately passed away last year. This artwork summarizes her love for horses, flowers and part of her younger self careless and free. A time of joy that she experienced in her life.

Today the artwork was received with tears of joy and happiness and I couldn’t be more grateful to be a reason to put a smile on her face.

Looking forward to producing and sharing more works and capturing legacies during my residency at the Liverpool/Camden hospitals.”
