Schools Microgrant Project - Activating conversations around loss, grief and compassion.

This year we invited submissions from schools across the country for a monetary grant to help encourage conversations in their school around loss, grief and compassion.

We are so pleased to say that, even though this year has thrown a number of challenges at us, we still had a number of applications. Jannali Public School (NSW) and West Ulverstone Public School (TAS) submitted particularly compelling projects to us.

Both the schools have committed to running a term long program around their individual ideas. Both of the ideas are based on the cycle of life and using this as an aid to teach the students about grief, loss and the various challenges along the way.

Even through the trials of this year, particularly in our schooling system - we so appreciate these two schools for their ongoing commitment to this new project. COVID-19 has really shown us that these topics are more relevant than ever and we are all really excited to see the progress in Term 3.

Being comfortable to tackle these conversations with young people is important. There are many ways to incorporate these things into your classrooms and homes without a formal microgrant program.

How do you talk about the death of a pet or animal?

What questions have kids asked in regards to COVID and their community?

How can we respond to these questions in a way that fosters connectedness throughout our communities?

We look forward to  sharing further progress on these school’s  projects - and we welcome enquiries for the next round of microgrants in 2021.

Thanks to Good Pitch and the Documentary Australia Foundation who have supported this project.
