Before I Die is an ongoing global public art project that originated in New Orleans in the United States in 2011. Artist Candy Chang was mourning the loss of a young friend who could not do all of the things she wanted before she died. Candy Chang wondered how she could commemorate her friend’s death. Then an idea came to her: put up a chalkboard in a public place and ask passers-by the question, “Before I die I would like to…” It was a huge success – there are now over 1000 Before I Die walls in over 73 countries around the world.
Before I Die is a gentle and enticing way to generate discussions in the community between friends and strangers, and an opportunity for individuals to reflect on the important things in life. Responses are usually fun, serious, inspiring and unexpected.
