Barbara was appointed Chief Executive of St Nicholas Hospice Care in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 2007 and has qualifications in Nursing, Systemic Family Therapy and Hospice Leadership and is also a Visiting Senior Fellow in End of Life Care, Department of Nursing Studies at University of Suffolk.
Barbara and her team at St Nicholas Hospice Care are currently undertaking a project to develop hospice services that will meet the needs of their community and are aligned to people’s experiences. By using a ‘Listen Learn Adapt’ method they hope to design sustainable services that can respond to people’s needs now and in the future following a public health palliative care approach.
Barbara has been involved with Hospices since 1981 and has just completed a PhD in Palliative Care with Lancaster University; her thesis explored the stories of community hospice volunteers who are visiting people who are at the end of life. The results of this thesis show how managing volunteers within a rigid hospice system could hinder our efforts to develop resilient death literate communities.
