Making a Festival of Death and Dying

Peter Banki, Ph.D & Victoria Spence

In this presentation we will explore the creative process that gave birth to the Festival of Death of Dying. The Festival of Death and Dying is an annual event, which took place for the first time in Sydney in 2016 and also in Melbourne for the first time in 2017.

The idea behind the festival is to suggest that death and dying is not simply negative, it can also be that which makes life appear most precious to us. In accordance with this vision, our intention has been to create a space where people come together not only to listen to talks and chat together, but also to have strong emotional and physical experiences.

In our presentation, we will talk about our curatorial practice, our respective backgrounds and roles, the history of images associated with the festival, the financial structure, the rhizomatic effects of the festival in the wider community and where we would like to go in the future.
